A Short Story- but why end it there?

Vision to Reality - with a little sawdust

Sometimes there is a need. Sometimes there is an opportunity.  Both ways can produce amazing results.

Here is a simple story, but the ending is yet to be written- but that's the goal.

Landscape and Tree companies all over the US are faced with the massive task of handling the logs and brush that they remove from properties everyday.  There are lots of solutions but sometimes, the driving force of completing their primary objective leaves little to no time for secondary products, like firewood.

A Focus on Sustainably

Some companies have the means to utilize the raw material from one process and create salable goods.  These include firewood, wood chips and sometimes, lumber.

Unfortunately, many of these companies simply can’t use the logs they harvest and they go to the dump.  But sometimes, they don’t.

Walnut, a highly sought after wood, is only valuable when the logs are in the correct supply chain.

The opportunity arose to utilize a few walnut logs that were outside of the normal processing trai, saving them from the firewood pile or dump.

Complimenting the Design to the Materials

Once the wayward walnut logs where milled and properly dried, its time for designs.

A crucial, but often overlooked or even forgotten, part of design is to take in to account the materials themselves.  Each board has a different set of creations that it would be well suited to be a part of.

In this case, the grain and structure of the log was straight and flaw free.  Lots of options, but the winner was the ever popular and always needed, dining room table.

Always Worth the wait.

It takes time to draw the specs, mill, and fit the boards together.  Glue needs to set, lots of sanding takes place, and drying oils need to cure.

It may seem like a lengthy process, but these few days of work are a small percentage of the life of the table.

Its Just the Beginning.

Here we are, at what may seem like the end of the story.  In reality, it was all a prelude to a key player of a generational story.

One unifying element of the human experience is the gathering together of friends and family to share in a meal for any number of reasons.

Holidays, birthdays, milestones,- the sunday roast, a huge cake, special cuisine- and the dining room table.  A place to gather your friends and family around, maybe a gift for your child, maybe a gift for their child. The story of a log- bound for nothing- became the beginning of a generational heirloom, a memory maker, a place of grounding.

This is why we do what we do. It’s for you. It’s for the trees. It’s for us all.
